Triggered by parents 4 1-click, unlocked with Toyed and investigated - wireless and mobile news Kindle fire

Kindle Fire

The Amazon Kindle fire is one of the best gifts of this holiday season.  There are some news about the 7' Tablet sold for $199 at Amazon.com for less than it costs to make.  It could be a money machine for Amazon, jailbroken for different operating systems and headaches for parents.

The Amazon Kindle fire received consumer reports "Best Buy" rating and analysts note that it is rather a sales tool for Amazon as a large tablet.  The Kindle is the only tablet that with the iPad for popularity and rivals ecosystem fire.

Morgan Stanley analyst, Scott Devitt believed that Amazon not deliver main objective a Tablet experience that popular IOS matches Apple's, but rather the already combined with its low price, has built great content ecosystem, the Amazon to the Tablet, is more than offset its technical inferiority on the iPad.

"We believe that Amazon.com has to the monetization points his device control, facilitating the flow of content," Devitt reported "to do this, Amazon price it at $199 with the consumer adoption." «With a large installed base of app developers is a real incentive for the content to produce ignition fire buying owner.»

Content is not everything to ignite fire , to control the Amazon, because children can buy much more than when using one of the parents tablet.  Parents find that, if they hand over the fire to ignite , children will be favorite toys and electronics on Amazon.com the 1-click service to buy the product.

When the fire to ignite buying through Amazon.com, it comes with Amazon account information installed and 1-Click ordering.  Anyone with the fire to ignite can 1-click you to buy what they want on Amazon.com.

A 3-year-old, said father Labs scenic founder Jason Rosenfled, that his daughter of a child ordered product. Rosenfeld stopped selling after seeing the order confirmation email.

Kindle fire has the function for parents, their children buy, when to limit applications downloaded on the tablets.  A father who is a software engineer, became angry as he, that he could remove fire Kindle Tablet not realized that he bought for his children, and she returned.

Or maybe someone could fire to ignite to your friend or relative, Loana then buys assets of products from Amazon.

Kurt Römer, chief security strategist for Citrix Systems, told of Reuters that parents and others should understand what use the fire to ignite and how it works before you let anyone.

Another problem is that a child drops a fire Kindle, breaks, and it must be set. Do-it-yourself types are know that Kindle fire is not so difficult to resolve.

If iFixit took apart the Kindle fire they gave fire ignite a renewability score: 8 out of 10 (10 is the easiest way to repair), the case is easy to open, the simple design and the LCD light task a replacement is not covered on the display, (if necessary), but the battery on the motherboard is stuck and curious requires.

Many reviews and analysts mention that the user experience on the Kindle was fire less than optimally, we fight, it is because the operating system Android 2.3 gingerbread for developed but was tablest for smartphones.   The Kindle was fire hacked the latest version of Android 4.0 used ice cream sandwich without Wi-Fi and audio.  Those that are technically inclined and no objection, that the guarantee is not valid for ready will soon change.

CyanagenMod works without sound, which will be a problem with listening to music or watch videos.

The Kindle fire has "Problems" with the connection to the Internet and does not have the best user experience.

The best features of s Kindle fire are the dual-core processor, free Amazon Cloud storage, cloud accelerates mobile browser and of course the price of $199.  Previously, are verified uses Android 2.3 (no Tablet OS) shortcomings of fire to ignite it and is missing Bluetooth reception area for mobile data, a camera and GPS.  The Kindle fire touchscreen is only 7 inches...

Hacker Installs Ice Cream Sandwich on Kindle Fire - PCWorld

An effort to hack Amazon’s Kindle Fire and install Ice Cream Sandwich on the device is well underway.

A hacker named Steven has posted a video of Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Kindle Fire, along with more information in the XDA Developers forums. The hack is incomplete, lacking support for audio, Wi-Fi, the accelerometer and the light sensor. Also, transitions look a bit choppy, but it's a start.

The hacker plans to start an open source project for Ice Cream Sandwich on the Kindle Fire, and will post his code to it. This was only a matter of time, considering the Android 4.0 code is open source.

Hackers have taken a keen interest in the Kindle Fire, probably due to its $200 price tag, dual-core processor and popularity among consumers. Shortly after its launch, users figured out how to root the tablet and install the Android Market, freeing themselves from the Amazon Appstore's smaller catalog. For users who want a more typical Android experience on the Kindle Fire, CyanogenMod 7 is also available as an alternative to Amazon's highly customized interface.

Amazon has only put up a small fight to Kindle Fire hacking, even though the company reportedly loses money on every tablet sold, and relies on sales of Amazon's built-in services to turn a profit. The latest software update removes root access, but doesn't prevent users from re-rooting their devices. And users who have installed a completely different ROM on the Kindle Fire won't have to worry about updates from Amazon anyway.

My guess is that Amazon doesn't think stopping a handful of hackers is worth the trouble. That's good news for users who want a cheap tablet for tinkering.

Motorola unveils two new Android tablets for US - Android Apps Appolicious

Motorola brings two new Android tablets to the market, the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1, each on Verizon’s LTE network. The manufacturer’s been particularly quiet on the US front, having already launched the Xoom 2 in the UK and Ireland, giving stateside consumers very little in the way of tablets since the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Xoom back in February. It’s very clear that Android’s become a global brand, with a $100 tablet (running ICS) emerging in China, with plans to make its way to the US soon. But don’t count out smartphones just yet. Japan’s one of the most active countries when it comes to Android devices, and Fujitsu’s released a new smartphone called the Arrows ES IS12F. It’s waterproof and has a 4-inch AMOLED display.

Motorola’s latest tablets are the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and Droid Xyboard 10.1, both running Android 3.2 with upgrades for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich next year. They also boast dual-core 1.2GHz processors and 1GB of RAM. The displays (the smaller at 8.2 inches and the other at 10.1 inches) are just bigger than the standard sizes coming from competitors, and use Gorilla Glass with water-repellent coating to resist scratches and spills. The Xyboards probably look familiar to many of you, as they’re physically the same as the Xoom 2 line launched across the just a few weeks ago. They’ll also come with preloaded apps for business users, including Quickoffice HD and Citrix GoToMeeting, with enterprise-grade security to keep your IT department happy. Look for the Xyboards in Verizon stores now, priced respective to their hardrive sizes.

The Kindle Fire has been basking in the limelight of being an affordable and accessible Android tablet. Amazon may be facing some competition with a $100 MIPS-based Android tablet, currently available in China. A joint effort by the US-based MIPS and the China-based mobile chip provider Ingenic Semiconductor, the new tablet is already ahead of the Kindle Fire in one key way: it comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s among the first ICS tablets to hit the market, just don’t expect it in the States for another few months. The tablet comes with a 7-inch multi-touch screen, MIPS’ JZ4770 1GHz processor, and has front and rear-facing cameras with 1080p video capture. There’s support for Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3 and microSD ports.

Another overseas launch comes from Fujitsu and Toshiba, releasing another Android-powered smartphone onto the market. The Arrow ES comes with a 4-inch NEW AMOLED display with 480x800 resolution, running a Qualcomm snapdragon CPU at 1.4GHz. It comes with 512MB of RAM and 1GB of ROM and a 5-megapixel camera. The Arrow ES body is waterproof, and the phone comes with support for Bluetooth 2.1+, DLNA support and a microSDHC slot. Some additional perks include e-wallet NFC integration and a digital TV tuner. No further details have been given regarding the price or the exact launch date, and there’s no telling if it will be available in the States. With Android’s growing popularity and a saturated device market in Japan, we could very well see some more U.S. releases from the likes of Toshiba.

Amazon: Kindle fire update coming - CNET

Amazon's new tablet is still on fire.

Owners Amazon's new tablet can expect a software update in the next two weeks.

(Credit:Amazon)

Just a month after the Kindle Fire's launch, owners of the Amazontablet can expect a software update to address performance issues.

Users have complained about problems accessing Wi-Fi networks and the Internet, slow and erratic scrolling, and inefficient apps.

However, it appears the online retailer is planning a software update to address customers' concerns.

"In less than two weeks, we're rolling out an over-the-air update to Kindle Fire," Drew Herdener, a company spokesman, told The New York Times. The update is expected to address privacy issues, as well as navigation sluggishness. However, he didn't say whether the update would address other customer complaints. Amazon representatives did not immediately respond to a request for additional information.

The Kindle Fire, which launched on November 14 as a potential "iPad killer," is estimated to have sold more than 2 million units, but theAndroid-powered tablet has been plagued by performance complaints from owners. Some Fire tablet owners complain they can't connect to their Wi-Fi networks, while others say they can connect to their routers but can't access the Internet. Other complain of a lack of privacy on the device's OS.

As a Kindle fire faces critics are cures promised - New York Times

A few of their many complaints: there are no external volume control. From switch is easy to hit by accident. Web pages take a long time to load. There is no privacy on the device. from a spouse or a child who takes it will immediately know everything, what you have done. The touch screen is often slow and sometimes downright stubborn.

Recorded individual complaints - to the Amazon site - received for confirmation last week as a usability expert, Jakob Nielsen condemned fire, a level it says "a disappointingly poor" experience offered. For not so slender like toothpicks, he warned users, Finger are, the screen could be particularly frustrating to manipulate.

"I feel, that the fire is a failure," said Mr Nielsen, Nielsen Norman Group, a consulting firm Silicon Valley, in an interview. "I can not recommend to buy it."

All of this would be enough to send some products directly to the cemetery, where languishing Apple Newton, the Edsel, New Coke and McDonald's arch Deluxe. But as you could say a number of retailers and tech companies, it would be foolish to underestimate Amazon.

Amazon sees the Kindle line of devices is critical to its future as virtual memory and ready, lose money from the sale of each for reasons of market shares. Once dominance has been achieved, it will make money for films, books, music, download the user directly from Amazon.

First of all it has to however, ubiquitous devices. Promotion of them will certainly help each day to its tens of millions of customers on the cheapest price. If the idea of the tablet in the mainstream, Apple makes affordable it Amazon.

The dealer says that the fire is Kindle most successful product, that it ever the a measure of enthusiasm, which revealed nothing; launched It was not specified how many fires it has sold, how many kindles it has sold ever. Also, it says that there is still more fires to the strong demand building. But at the same time, it acknowledges that it is working on improvements.

"In less than two weeks, we an OTA update ignite fire, rolls are", drew Herdener, a company spokesman said the.

There will be improvements in performance and multitouch navigation, and customers have the possibility of the list of items that show what they have done recently to edit. Women are no longer wondering why their husbands were looking at a dating site if they said that they played angry birds.

Amazon refuses to say, but soon – probably in the spring - it is an improved version of the device itself. Another recording is, that all traders have said Mr Nielsen. "If this is a mistake, fire on the dust of history stack is doomed."

Despite Amazon's silence on the matter have analysts has been to assess the company of three fires to five million this quarter will sell. They are not increasing their estimates or lower them.

Amazon's devotion to this product line is so that it divided reduced the price the original Kindle e-reader, and started to sell it through other retailers such as Wal-Mart and best buy for $79, as well as clearly visible on their website. If Amazon Apple-like edges, analysts estimate that the basic Kindle could be $180 cost.

According to the calculations of the research firm IHS iSuppli Kindle the $79 costs Amazon $84 to make. This sum includes no research and development, shipping or with a third-party distributors, the wholesale discount. They add, and Amazon could be as much as $20 for each lose $79 of sold Kindle, such as best buy.

For most hardware manufacturers, a recipe for business would be suicide. But as soon as the device in a shopper home page is selected, which stop losses and begins the consumption.

How Samsung Galaxy Nexus Differs From The Original Galaxy S

Samsung nexus
Samsung Galaxy S in 2010, we quickly, mobile devices, a favorite among all Smartphone users as I saw the launch of the established itself. In March of 2011 we are one of the biggest selling smartphone ever released, established by its predecessor, the Galaxy S2 are at the foundation of the success and the release of an updated version of the original phone. More than 9 months, their latest flagship model, the new Samsung Galaxy are ready to launch the nexus. We look to the original specifications of this new model is on the device, see the differences between S.

The Galaxy S fastest mobile phone at the time of its release is available, thanks to the 1 Ghz Cortex A8 processor, which includes the powerful chipset. This is the first model in the 1 Ghz processor or chip the size of the enemy and many other manufacturers soon replication set the benchmark. The new Samsung nexus as well as the fast chip as well as to dual-core boasts one. 1.2 G h Z cortex A9, a new model that you can use one of the fastest mobile phone models also remain dual-core technology adds more impressive in terms of multitasking. Providing two cores in one processor's advantage in the second run in the background, you can keep the other applications that are currently undertaking during the operation, only. This even run multiple apps still provide the fastest possible speed dial. Internal storage capacity has been increased to 16 GB is also much more pictures and audio tracks, and other media files that can be stored in this new model, which means the terminals. The new device in the RAM memory is 1 GB 512 also is doubled.

In regards to the original Galaxy S phone camera facilities ahead of its time and 720 p high definition resolution video capture feature that can record footage, along with providing a high quality 5 megapixel camera, Samsung has a new video capture resolution 1080p resolution at that nexus of higher standards, provides a boost to 3 million pixels. In response to other classes at the time of the release of Galaxy S model and the same can be said of the new Samsung Galaxy nexus. The New Samsung Galaxy S II Ad Makes Fun Of Apple iPhone Fanboys Waiting In Line (Again)

New Samsung Galaxy S II Ad Makes Fun Of Apple iPhone Fanboys Waiting In Line (Again)

Samsung continues its snarky assault on those who wait (in line for the new iPhone 4S) in its latest ad, released Friday morning.

By now, the setup for these commercials should be familiar: Apple fanboys and fangirls wait in line and discuss how excited they are for the upcoming iPhone, only to be upstaged by a passerby and his or her higher-quality Samsung Galaxy S II (that the owner did not have to brave the cold for). Previous ads have highlighted the Galaxy S II's screen size and 4G LTE capability; this one points out the apparent misconception that it is difficult to download and upload music and movies to an Android phone.

WATCH:

The advertisement, which repeats the tagline of previous Galaxy S II commercials by closing with the claim that "The Next Big Thing Is Already Here," also makes passing reference to Google Music, the recently announced service that stores 20GB of music for free and is available to stream either via Android app or in the mobile browser. Like iTunes, Google Music also features a music download store with most songs going for 99 cents, and by the tone of this ad, Google and its handset manufacturers view the new music service as an equalizer for Apple's iTunes.

That's a Google-Apple throwdown, however; the Samsung-Apple rivalry, meanwhile, has spilled over from electronics stores and onto many other platforms. Aside from these direct attacks in the media, it was recently reported that Samsung's smartphone sales surpassed those of Apple last year, making the Korean company the largest handset manufacturer in the world for Q3 2011. Apple and Samsung have most notably been locking horns in courtrooms all over the world, with lawsuits and countersuits in Australia, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan and elsewhere.

For now, though, the battle has resumed on the boob tube (and will continue when Samsung releases its Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone with the newest version of Android, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich). Check out the latest Samsung ad here, and see the first commercials in the series here, here and here.

Symbian Anna finally hits the T-Mobile Nokia C7 Astound

If you take a look at the progress of Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia in rolling out Symbian Belle to its more capable smartphones, you will find out that the updates are not happening as fast as we would want it to be. This is also the case for the roll-out of Symbian Anna to those eagerly awaiting the update on their devices.

If you happen to have T-Mobile USA as your carrier of choice and are toting a Nokia C7 Astound from the carrier, congratulations are in order given the fact that the Symbian Anna update for the said handset is already available. As a background, the C7 Astound is basically the Nokia C7 that the company released to the rest of the world. Unlike the C7 Astound, the original C7 shipped with Anna while the C7 Astound was stuck with Symbian^3.1.

The Symbian Anna update which is being rolled-out to the T-Mobile C7 Astound via OTA is about 11MB big and brings a web browser that is faster and along with enhancements on the text input of the handset among others. While waiting for the update tohit your device, you can pass the time by reading through the specs sheet of the Nokia C7 Astound from T-Mobile.

The C7 Astound is a solidly-built handset that measures 117.3 x 56.8 x 10.5 mm and tips the scales at 130 grams. With these vital stats, we can safely say that the C7 Astound is not as sexy and lightweight as we would want it to be but the handset packs a rather attractive design aesthetic.

When the C7 Astound was released, Nokia wasn’t into coming up with Windows Phones yet so the company doesn’t make use of SoC chipset yet at that time. This is the case with the C7 Astound where it only has an ARM11 processor taking care of the computing power for the device while the graphical concerns are handled by the handset’s dedicated Broadcom BCM2727 graphics chip.

The C7 Astound has 256 MB of RAM that supports the processor of the device in powering its operating system while the internal memory of the handset is pegged at 8GB. Despite the meager onboard memory of the handset, the C7 Astound comes with a dedicated memory expansion slot that lets a user add up to 32GB of external storage to beef up the internal storage of the device.

The display of the C7 Astound is an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with a diagonal of 3.5-inches. Its resolution is at 640 x 360 pixels wile pixel density comes up to 210 ppi. The display of the handset is also covered withCorning’s Gorilla Glass making it scratch-resistant. As for its shooters, the C7 Astound has two – a primary 8MP shooter found at its back panel and a VGA snapper adorning the handset’s front panel.

Given these attributes and capabilities, we already know that the Nokia C7 Astound from T-mobile is one capable device. Upgrading it to Symbian Anna will only make the device better.

ZTE Unveils "Blade" successor of smartphone

The Chinese manufacturer ZTE has just taken the veil on a new smartphone budget, which could be subsequently welcomed ZTE blade.

The original blade was renamed as the Orange San Francisco, it is not surprising that ZTE is also San Francisco 2, which reported us in mid-November.

This update of version packs a processor 800 MHz instead of block of 600 MHz of the original device, the camera is also amended until 5-megapixel camera, while the rest of the spec range remains the same including 512 MB of RAM and a touch screen 800 x 480 pixels of 3.2 inches.

However, according to IntoMobile, the true successor of the blade of ZTE, which may or may not end up a label of Blade 2, is designated as the V881.

The V881 will carry a larger screen to 3.8 inches (with the same resolution of 800 x 480 pixels), a Qualcomm MSM8255 1 GHZ processor and the same 512 MB RAM and 5 megapixel camera as the San Francisco 2.

Judging by the prices above $-160 or 120 Euros - we believe that will cost approximately £ 100-£ 120 to United Kingdom, which is what the original San Francisco went for the launch.
There was no official word of ZTE on a release date, but we will post more details as and when they emerge.

Nokia Symbian Belle build for Nokia N8 leaked

We have a good news for Nokia Symbian Anna update running smartphone owners patiently await the next major update dubbed — Symbian Belle.

Nokia's Symbian platform developer/hacker named Taylor managed to grab a fresh release candidate build of Symbian Belle and released the same for the Nokia N8 handset.

This is not an official update but a leaked version so we would recommend waiting for the official update to roll out. However, this does mean that the official one is almost ready and would arrive soon.

The Mobile Indian reported that the Nokia Symbian Belle update is being expected to rolled out in India by year end. The leaked Symbian Belle update build 111.030.0607 for the Nokia N8 devices brings Java Fix and also EQ Fix along with number of language packs.

Symbian Belle has its own set of distinctive features over the current Symbian Anna update. Apart from resizable widgets, more homescreens and notification bar, the most important feature of the Belle update is the Near Field Communication Support.

However, Nokia N8 doesn't have any NFC chip so every N8 owner wonders what is taking so long for the Symbian Belle update. Apparently, the Symbian Belle update for the Symbian Anna running update should be available within couple of weeks from now.

Which is real Samsung superphone? Samsung Galaxy S II or Galaxy Nexus?

Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus are two top-tier Android smartphones from the Korean tech giant. Galaxy S II, the second upgrade to the popular Galaxy S series hit stores in the middle of the year. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone was actually designed as a challenge to Apple’s 2011 iPhone upgrade.

The new Galaxy Nexus is really a third generation Google Nexus phone. Samsung manufactured the phone for Google like Nexus S, the second Google Nexus phone. But the device was largely reviewed as an upgrade to Galaxy S II though it has some hardware shortfalls to the second gen Galaxy S.

Whatever, apart from being a third Google Nexus phone, Galaxy Nexus is recognized for its software, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Nexus is the first device to run on Ice Cream Sandwich, the most outstanding version of Google Android ever. Here we take Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S II for a detailed comparison. Many analysts have pointed out that Galaxy Nexus is weak in hardware when compared with Galaxy S II. Anyway, read on to see which of Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus will really worth your money.

Processor
Galaxy S II mounts a dual core 1.2GHz processor for high speed performance. When realized, Galaxy S II was one of few smartphones to feature a 1.2GHz dual core processor. In fact, Samsung prepared the phone to take on the heir to iPhone 4, the most sold out smartphone in the world. Galaxy Nexus also comes with the same 1.2 GHz dual core processor. It means both Galaxy phones offer the same processor speed.

Winner: Draw.

Operating System
It is here Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus have their biggest difference, indeed. Galaxy S II runs on an Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The phone was one of the first smartphones to appear on Gingerbread, the smartphone-friendly version of Android. Meanwhile, you have the brand new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy Nexus. In fact, Google chooses its own smartphone to debut new version of its Android mobile operating system.

The Mountain View firm launched Gingerbread on Nexus S and Android 2.2 Froyo on Nexus One, respectively the second and first versions of Google Nexus from Samsung and HTC. Ice Cream Sandwich, Google’s replay to Apple iOS 5, has many outstanding features like a fresh user interface, revamped web browser, voice recognition and cloud storage features.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Display
Both smartphones are from Samsung, the champion in mobile display technology. Thus the devices have high quality Super AMOLED display. Galaxy Nexus has a large 4.65-inch HD display when compared with Galaxy S II’s 4.3-inch display. Both displays are capacitive touchscreens and perform quite superbly.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Camera
It is a one thing that turns Galaxy Nexus an underdog to Galaxy S II. Samsung built Galaxy S II with an advanced 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel secondary camera. Of course, only a device with enhanced camera and other features can take on the new iPhone version. But Samsung has prepared Galaxy Nexus with a moderate 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front camera. Well, Nexus is up with decent cameras for both image capturing and video chatting, but it falls short to Galaxy S II in the category.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S II

Memory
Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus have the same 1GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB internal memory options for data storage. Both devices sport microSD slots to load an external memory up to 32GB.

Winner: Draw.

Network connectivity
Both Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus are 4G LTE smartphones. They are carried by the largest cellular service provider in the U.S., Verizon Wireless, the leader in 4G LTE connectivity also.

Winner: Draw.

Price
Verizon sells Galaxy S II for $199 and Galaxy Nexus for $299 with two year contract. The unlocked versions of the devices respectively come for $449 and $750.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy S II.

What others say?

See what Dan Sung of Pocket-lint concludes after comparing Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus,
“It’s going to be a close run decision for anyone looking to buy one of these two Android super-phones. There are two things that the Galaxy Nexus has going for it – the new software and that incredible screen. The trouble is that they come at the price of a more sluggish graphics processor and less powerful camera. When you throw in the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S II will eventually get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, then the scales really do start to tip.”

Wrap-up
As far as hardware specs and price are taken into account, Galaxy S II is the best pick for an Android lover. The only things the consumer will miss in such a decision are Ice Cream Sandwich and a large display. In fact, the new version of Android will soon be arriving on the second Galaxy S phone. Once the frenzy of Galaxy Nexus is over, Verizon will be updating Galaxy S II with the ICS. So at this point of time it will be great to take home a Galaxy S II rather than Galaxy Nexus.

RIM roots out the problem with BBX and Playbook

In an official statement RIM issued regarding the rumors of the BlackBerry PlayBook being rooted They assure us that the PlayBook security is still intact and are in contact with security researchers to “root” out the issue.

“Research In Motion (RIM) is aware of a claim made on Twitter by security researchers working together that suggests the ability to “jailbreak” a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The term “jailbreaking” is commonly used to describe altering the software on a smartphone or tablet in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by the manufacturer. BlackBerry smartphone users are not affected. RIM is currently investigating this claim and has been in contact with one of the security researchers to discuss it.

RIM is currently not aware of a jailbreak being leveraged by anyone other than the researchers, who claim to have performed a jailbreak on their own BlackBerry PlayBook tablets only. If it is determined that the claim is accurate, RIM will follow its standard response process to develop and release a software update that is designed to minimize adverse impact to our customers or carrier partners. RIM is aware that the security researchers have stated they intend to release a tool to jailbreak the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. If such a tool is released, RIM will investigate it.

The security of mobile devices and major networked systems is tested by third-party security researchers every day. RIM also continually tests the security of its own products, and volunteers its products to recognized industry experts for security testing and certification to help identify possible issues. RIM is committed to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and to working with researchers to continue to protect our customers.”Let’s hope this is true, as RIM has been getting a lot of undeserved bad press as of late.
